A people-who-need-people piece, divided into four duos (a mother and widowed daughter, a teenage boy and girl, two prepubescent boys, two old biddies), played out in a frozen Scottish coastal town. The amount of outdoor activity and the shuttling back and forth between pairs help to disguise the stage origins of the thing, but the dialogue still gives it away. The gimmick of casting the real-life, look-alike mother and daughter Phyllida Law and Emma Thompson adds a little interest, or anyway a little distraction. Directed by Alan Rickman.
