Carroll Ballard is an agile and sure-handed technician, but he is not a fast worker: four years between The Black Stallion and Never Cry Wolf, three more till The Nutcracker, another six till this. And a suspicion has arisen over that time that his subject matter is a matter of indifference. The sailing sequences -- in a storyline loosely suggested by Dennis Conner's loss and recovery of the America's Cup -- are hectic, impressionistic, virtuosic displays, almost succeeding in transforming the event into a decent spectator sport. But there is a long time aground in between races, and the seat-of-the-pants band of yuppie yachtsmen (echoes of the hey-let's-put-on-a-show musical formula) is as unconvincing as it is unappealing.
