Tennis courtship. An over-the-hill Brit in the men's bracket (ranked 119th in the world, down from a high of eleventh) meets and mates with a rising American on the women's side, and gains the confidence to make a final run at a Grand Slam title. Not much sense of reality in either the relationship or the sport (the animated tennis ball is no help), despite the authentic backdrop of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, and the participation of John McEnroe, Chris Evert, and Mary Carillo as commentators. The unaggressive charm of Paul Bettany fends off obnoxiousness. With Kirsten Dunst, Sam Neill, Bernard Hill, Eleanor Bron, Jon Favreau; directed by Richard Loncraine. (2004) — Duncan Shepherd
