Marooned in the Arctic by shipwreck, three American whalers, ca. 1900, are nursed and adopted by Eskimos, who embrace these strange, full-grown foundlings as "dog-children." The ensuing discoveries of Eskimo culture, through inquisitive and suspicious Western eyes, are assumed, with good reason, to be at least as satisfying to the audience's curiosity as a field trip to the Museum of Man. Things proceed along this course (and in the adventurous footsteps of Robert J. Flaherty) quite well, quite a ways. But there is too little fleshing-out of the characters for the tale to reach its ultimate goal of interpersonal and intercultural tragedy. With Timothy Bottoms, Warren Oates, Lou Gossett; directed by Philip Kaufman. (1974) — Duncan Shepherd
