A film about dementia that’s more than an Oscar-trolling showcase for its attached actors. First-time writer/director Elizabeth Chomko infuses her characters with varying degrees of impulsive unceremoniousness and unanticipated comedic curlicues that make it hard not to love watching this extraordinary cast get a handle on grief. (Not since Carl Reiner’s Where’s Poppa? has a film about a family faced with placing an elder in a nursing home brought forth this many laughs.) Two intimacy-defying moments between mother (Blythe Danner) and daughter (Hilary Swank) — one in a shower, the other an eleventh hour moment of bedside clarity — live on long after the closing credits fade. As the husband who refuses to let go, Robert “American Treasure” Forster (Diamond Men, Mulholland Drive) adds yet another naturalistic notch to a long and illustrious career that’s always been defined by two factors: honesty and integrity. Don't miss this movie! With: Taissa Farmiga and Michael Shannon putting his crusty vulnerability to good use. (2018) — Scott Marks
