Timid political comedy in which the ex-President -- "the most popular in history," despite being the first to be divorced in office -- faces off against a hardware-store owner over the mayoralty of a Maine small town. But the real bone of contention is the hardware man's dangling girlfriend. The big-screen splash of Ray (Everybody Loves Raymond) Romano is small-screen in conception (notwithstanding the prune-cheeked nudist jogger), and the upstart is badly outplayed by Gene Hackman as Mr. President. Or to put it the other way around, Hackman plays far beneath himself. With Maura Tierney, Marcia Gay Harden, Rip Torn, and Christine Baranski; directed by Donald Petrie. (2004) — Duncan Shepherd
