Paranormal adventure comedy, though in most other ways a pretty normal one. The sub-Edgar Rice Burroughs quest for the Room of Gold in the Lost City of Ecuador is just tedious, and the dialogue cries out for either a TV laugh track or a vaudeville drum-and-cymbal routine. But Jeff Goldblum and Cyndi Lauper, as a psychometrist and a trans-medium respectively, bring in some eccentricity all their own. Goldblum's brand is as likable as usual; Lauper's brand might usually be likable too, but she had never before been able to display it on a movie screen (in rock videos, sure). Her clothes are a very large part of the modest amount of fun. Peter Falk, Julian Sands; directed by Ken Kwapis. (1988) — Duncan Shepherd
