A New York vampire story, with too much of New York -- psychiatrist's office, literary agency, art museum, singles bar, disco -- and too little of vampires. What little there is of the latter (a man, bitten on the neck by a casual pickup, takes to wearing dark glasses, drawing the blinds, gobbling up a kitchen cockroach, and behaving in general like a punk rocker) is schizophrenic delusion anyway -- or in other words, simply more of New York. (Best delusion: that an inverted couch is a coffin lid under which to sleep through the day.) And Nicolas Cage, as the delusionary vampire, seems to go round the bend several furlongs ahead of his character. The plight of the secretary who has to work for this maniac is more compelling than any plight of his own. With Maria Conchita Alonso, Elizabeth Ashley, and Jennifer Beals; written by Joseph Minion; directed by Robert Bierman. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
