One big wow, sum of a lot of little wows. But once that's been said, what's left? Enumeration of the wows? Ranking of them in size? (The flying motorboat, the flying cow, the entire house somersaulting across the road, etc., etc.) It must be said -- periodically, if not necessarily now -- that the artistic vision of any movie that puts special effects ahead of everything else can fairly be classified as myopic. To say nothing of increasingly common. But Twister, aiming for definitiveness and comprehensiveness on the topic of tornadoes, at least shows us some things we haven't seen before. With Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz; directed by Jan De Bont. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
