Alias Miss Malaprop 2000, alias the Mistress of the Mixed Metaphor, a self-described "private defective," a peerless gum-chewer if not gumshoe, who stumbles upon a case of political chicanery while employed as a security guard at a Pacific Northwest casino. "You're out of your rocker," "ya gotta grab the bull by the tail and look it in the eye," "an ace up my hole," "to beat a dead horse to death," "nobody's human," "drinking yourself into Bolivia," "gone to hell in a handbag," "big wheel in a small pond," "still a little green behind the ears," "the ball is in your camp," "between a rock and the deep blue sea" -- it, or she, goes on and on like that; and it, or she, acquires no additional charm through Emily Watson's flattened, neutralized, dehumanized accent, which sounds neither British nor American, just strange. Altogether an unusually tiresome film, even for director Alan Rudolph (whose middle name is Tiresome), despite amusing turns by Nick Nolte and, a much tighter turn, Stephen Lang. With Dermot Mulroney, Nathan Lane, Will Patton, Lesley Ann Warren. (2000) — Duncan Shepherd
