An army deserter in Second World War England hides out as a woman, in padded bra, on the farm of a lone POW's wife. It is not, as a brief synopsis may suggest, a female-impersonation comedy. (The alternate title, Soldier in Skirts, gives no clearer an idea). Adapted from a story by H.E. Bates, it might just get by on the page, where one's mind's eye could do some very rough sketching. Director Michael Apted makes some intelligent moves to counteract the problem: the woman who shields the deserter is the sandstone-faced Glenda Jackson, and the rough-and-ready army sergeant who unwittingly takes a fancy to him is the stove-like Oliver Reed. If a man can't look feminine alongside those two, there's no hope. For Brian Deacon at any rate, there is apparently no hope. (1973) — Duncan Shepherd
