Jack Lemmon as a good-time Charlie whose only ambition in life, before he must succumb to leukemia, is to see his introspective son come out of himself and play. And his desperate attempts to pass along his knack for having fun are repaid tenfold when the son treats him to a This Is Your Life surprise party on his final birthday. This is the sort of role Lemmon could play in his sleep, and it's to his credit that he seems to keep pinching himself to stay awake. With Robby Benson and Lee Remick; directed by Bob Clark.
