The My Cousin Vinny director, Jonathan Lynn, returns to the courtroom, in quest of something other than truth and justice. Michael Richards is amusing enough as an unemployed actor obliged, for unswallowable reasons, to bluff his way through a Podunk criminal proceeding as an imposter defense attorney. (He exhibits no greater competence, and no less amusingness, in an acting audition.) The concurrent self-awakening of the actual defense attorney tends to be a distraction and a dampener, though Jeff Daniels has his amusing moments, too. With Charlize Theron, Jessica Steen, Alexandra Wentworth, Austin Pendleton, Rip Torn. (1997) — Duncan Shepherd
