The call girl as sacrificial lamb. She works for an S&M agency, so the uniform kinkiness of the clientele is to be expected: "My dream is to rape dead women." The detailed sex scenes -- spiritual crucibles, really -- are very long and very strong, despite some softening via the sentimentalized heroine: demure, docile, a sort of ingenuous co-ed enrolled in the wrong major. Outside of the sex scenes, not much else occurs in this rigorous and chilly film, till a final romantic quest of excruciating embarrassment: even more of it than in the sex scenes, and more sentimentality too, with nearly Fellini-esque levels of pathos and whimsy. Starring Miho Nikaido; directed by Ryu Murakami. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
