A middle-class black family in South Central L.A. is visited by an uninvited face from the past -- their specific personal past but also their symbolic racial past. There is an air of theatricality about the piece -- a stiltedness, a stuffiness -- and there is an insufficient air of magic. Yet it's nice to see such ordinary and unstereotyped (non-show-biz, non-sports, non-crime) black society, and especially nice to see the admirable Carl Lumbly in that society. With Danny Glover, Paul Butler, Mary Alice, and Richard Brooks; written and directed by Charles Burnett. (1990) — Duncan Shepherd
