Something to put in the right-hand column of your list of the pros and cons of adoption: the possibility that the biological parents might be homicidal maniacs and want to regain custody. Wesley Strick, who wrote the remake of Cape Fear, mines the same vein in his directing debut (implement of choice: the pickaxe), and Keith Carradine toils hard and well to match that movie's Robert De Niro in unalleviated vileness. All in all, a nasty piece of work, nicely photographed by Bobby Bukowski. With Moira Kelly, Vincent Spano, Daryl Hannah, and Julia Devin. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
