The discovery by a scraggly Norwegian geologist (Kristoffer Joner) of a pending tsunami just happens to coincide with the day he’s planning to uproot his family and move to accept a new position in another town. While there are no cruise ships to upend or towering infernos to extinguish — just a homicidal rock slide, the likes of which the sleepy little resort community hasn’t experienced in almost 60 years — the spirit of disaster master Irwin Allen lives in almost every frame. Cameras quiver, ceilings exfoliate foundation dust, and young love blossoms at the most unlikely of moments. Add subtitles and terrific CG effects (and remove the box photos of character actors that once lined the bottoms of posters), and you’ll find much to enjoy in this straight-faced throwback to doomsday, ’70s style. There is one downside to the mayhem: the film’s made such a positive impression that director Roar Uthaug’s been pegged to helm the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. It’s been nice knowing you.
