Val (Regina Casé) has spent a lifetime looking after children that aren’t hers. The habitual live-in housekeeper who’s “almost like family” asks the bosses to put a roof over the head of her estranged daughter Jéssica’s (Camila Márdila) during the time it will take the young woman to pass a college entrance exam. Jéssica immediately sets out to test the boundaries her mother has long ago learned to live by, and before long she’s occupying the guest room, not sleeping on the floor of the maid’s quarters. Be they eavesdropping on a privileged family conversation or seen dining through doorframes, Anna Muylaert frequently directs her players to operate out of the squared-off, evenly-lit portions of the CinemaScope frame that quietly mirror their lives' stations. This droll, beautifully paced Brazilian class comedy blooms at every turn, starting with the myriad layers brought to light by the title alone. (2015) — Scott Marks
