A Western with a story as uncomplicated as its camera filters are heavy (yellow for day, blue for night), made compelling by its cast and performances. Violence begets violence, the love of money is the root of all evil (or at least, the biggest evils), religion is a sham designed to preserve order instead of combating wickedness, and a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. (Especially when he has nothing left to lose.) Worth seeing just for the faces, starting with Mads Mikkelsen as the suffering hero, then moving on to Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the rotten, savvy heavy, Eva Green as the mutilated woman, and Jonathan Pryce as the craven mayor. Also impressive: the intimate sense of imminent brutality — the violence under the veneer of nascent civilization. (2015) — Matthew Lickona
