What’s the best way to cure Cameron’s (Chloë Grace Moretz, in full non-confrontational mode) attraction to members of the same sex? Send her to “God’s Promise,” a conversion therapy center, and stick her in a bunk with a lesbian roommate. Conveniently set in 1993, this dumb-as-a-post expose of self-loathing homophobe/Vice President Mike Pence’s pet project deserves to be laughed off the screen. As facility overseer Dr. Lydia Marsh, every pearl of dialog that comes out of Jennifer Ehle’s mouth will be met with gales of laughter: “Cameron’s already a masculine name. To abbreviate it to something less feminine only exacerbates your gender confusion.” Top that with a scene of self-mutilation followed by the line, “The early bird gets the worm.” Did co-writer/director Desiree Akhavan really think this bumbling attempt to state the obvious would make a dent in the current political climate? Tommy Wiseau laughs at this! Miseducation deserves to replace The Room as The Ken’s midnight regular. (2017) — Scott Marks
