Donald Sutherland sags into his Roman toga when his soldier nephew (Channing Tatum) goes almost solo from Britannia into dark, primeval, 2nd-century Scotland to retrieve (great Caesar’s ghost!) the gold eagle of his dead father’s decimated legion. Though a limited actor, Tatum has the brawny force of meat on a mission. Kevin Macdonald directed this frontier yarn with robust verve, raw settings, storms of action (sometimes over-sliced by editing), and a feel for virile patriotism on both sides. It’s like a John Ford Western in armor, with Jamie Bell in the backup role that Ford would have given to Jeffrey Hunter. (2011) — David Elliott
