In a town of Neanderthals (and that’s just the women), Nora (Marie Leuenberger) takes it upon herself to rally the locals in favor of petitioning to give ladies the vote. The most liberating moment in this otherwise conventional tale of suffrage coming to a small Swiss village in the early ‘70s is the commendable open-air bicycle ride our heroine takes through the snowy countryside to visit her in-laws. There are also a few other standout scenes, most notably a Tupperware party where the women are handed mirrors and asked to take a good, loving look at their vaginas. Sadly, the parts that do work are no match for the obvious messaging that dominates the proceedings. (Attempts to add a little ironic relief to match the sorrow — a child asking, “Daddy, what’s an orgasm?” nude pinups on dartboards, etc. — fail miserably.) The film could not have premiered at a better cultural moment, which makes its prim presentation all the more regrettable. Petra Volpe (Dreamland) directs. (2017) — Scott Marks
