Inert entry in the YA dystopia franchise about a post-apocalyptic Chicago where people are divided by chief character trait — candor, erudition, courage, etc. (And where some people “diverge” by embodying all of them.) By this point, the city’s order has collapsed: the bad old boss is dead, but the new boss is bent on vengeance against her former oppressors, and things seem headed for civil war. So our heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her compatriots decide it’s time to head out of town for some self-discovery and surprising(?) revelations about The World They Thought They Knew. Also some halfhearted discussions about what makes us what we are. There’s a lot of standing and talking, a lot of clothes-wearing (and even some doffing), and a lot of very loving set design. What there isn’t is tension. Or feeling. With Jeff Daniels, Miles Teller, Theo James. Directed by Robert Schwentke. (2016) — Matthew Lickona
