Without benefit of intertitles or one spoken word – the spare dialogue is unintelligible – Brazilian animator Alê Abreu’s gentle fantasy, seen entirely through the coin slot eyes of a 5-year-old stick figure, speaks volumes. At first, all that’s needed to advance the simple tale of a son’s journey from countryside to big city in search of his father are a hint of color, suggestive contours, and deceptively simple line animation. It’s the calm before the kaleidoscopic storm, a collision of light and color that explode into a collage universe that calls to mind the disparate styles of Frida Kahlo, Joan Miró, Charles Addams, and Chuck Jones. It’s easy to see why it garnered awards from over 40 film festivals, including an Oscar nomination. (Caution: seeing it might cause one to evert their opinion of the unspeakably pontifical Inside Out.) Hey kids! Be sure and bring your parents. (2013) — Scott Marks
