Exiled in the desert, a beautiful young woman (Suki Waterhouse) happens upon an abandoned Chevy Malibu. Before checking for an ignition key, she checks her reflection in the rearview mirror. Two of her limbs are soon hacked off and placed on the dinner menu for a pack of beefy cannibals led by Jason Momoa. So far, so good, but one can tolerate just so much before the future begins to look like it belongs to someone else. For a dystopian mashup of George Miller, Alexander Jodorowsky, Tarantino, and others, it ends up feeling more like recycled Joel Schumacher. Still, in spite of numerous failings — overlong, self-indulgent, lumpy construction — ‘twas the romance, of all things, that kept me watching. A step up for director Ana Lily Amirpour the art-house darling (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night); let’s hope that next time, she leaves the crutches at home. (2016) — Scott Marks
