Rudimentary Rangers-and-rustlers, modelled on Tombstone at least as far as the prefatory narration (James Coburn in place of Robert Mitchum), the opening slaughter of innocents by an outlaw band, and the Doc Holliday cough of the head Ranger (Dylan McDermott). The Holliday erudition, meanwhile, has been transferred to a green recruit from Philadelphia (James Van Der Beek). The model is well chosen. But the copy can match none of its good characters, good performances (though Robert Patrick and Randy Travis look and sound good), good scenes, good lines, good music, good anything. With Alfred Molina, Vincent Spano, Tom Skerritt, Rachael Leigh Cook; directed by Steve Miner. (2001) — Duncan Shepherd
