It looked to be an auspicious occasion: a salute to hoofers, directed by the son of a Hollywood choreographer (both named Nick Castle). Nostalgia, however, has an uphill struggle. The rapprochement between tap-dance and rock-and-roll ("You wanna dance to that junk?") goes against nature; the photography is MTV pea soup; and the crime element is too heavy for an old-fashioned musical. But there are twinklings. The "sounds-of-the-city" number is a nice little idea that grows overlarge; the rooftop duet, though sloppily executed, stays decently small; and the "challenge" among a circle of old-timers is a beautiful illustration of what's meant by "style" -- personal style -- individual style -- inimitable style.
