The remembrances of the now mature and mellow-voiced narrator conjure up an adolescence that is seen as a storehouse of klutzy comedy material for the amusement and reassurance of those who are glad to be, or who would be glad to be, well beyond the stage of stumbling. The happenings are written with an unwitting wishfulness, forgetfulness, and callousness about teenagers. But they are infused with a degree of human feeling through Robert Mulligan's intelligence and gentleness in handling them; and also in his handling of the unknown actors and the icons of the American past: dirt roads, picket fences, screen doors. With Gary Grimes and Jennifer O'Neill. (1971) — Duncan Shepherd
