The viewer who failed to follow faithfully the Next Generation television series is liable to feel lost and left out whenever Capt. Picard goes all steely-eyed over his previous encounter with "the Borg." ("Borg? Sounds Swedish," says a character equally in the dark.) The tonnage of science-fictional gobbledegook in the script and the inherent nonsense in the protecting-the-timeline plot ("This is no time to argue about time. We don't have the time") will not help him to feel at home. And the leash-tugging special effects, together with the brevity of any rest stops, drag the proceedings swiftly into the faceless crowd of contemporary screen s-f. The post-WWIII pioneer of warp drive, as well as heavy boozer and golden-oldie connoisseur, is an enjoyable character, however, and Alfre Woodard as his assistant is, as always, a commanding actress. Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, James Cromwell; directed by Frakes. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
