Director Sofia Coppola explores the nuances of luxurious lassitude, as in Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. Her new hub of comfy ennui is L.A.’s Chateau Marmont, retro-nest hotel for the rich and cool. That includes young movie star Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff), who can plink Bach on the lobby piano but lacks drive except in his Ferrari. His drifting, playful relationship with his daughter (Elle Fanning, adorable and without vanity) is the softly purring pulse of this watchful, rueful film. Its moody, long takes can cast a spell, if you aren’t bored. (2011) — David Elliott
