Science fiction from Russia, stereotypically somber, talky, ponderous, unwieldy. It dispenses its rewards rather grudgingly: a startling visual trick here, a pastoral insert shot there, and an overall tone of seriousness such as you might expect at a "Space Emigration" seminar. Through most of its three hours, you are looking at a solitary head floating on the widescreen river. Shot in 70mm; directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. (1973) — Duncan Shepherd
