Summer, 1910. An impoverished family of cannibals living near the titular beach resort begin to literally have tourists for dinner in a new slapstick romp from Bruno Dumont. When was the last time you saw a comedy of physical absurdism that drew many a laugh from nothing more than its characters’ ability to move funny? Fabrice Luchini effects a gagged-up gait that would make Jacques Tati and Groucho Marx roar with approval. Didier Després and Cyril Rigaux co-star as a Laurel & Hardy-inspired team of detectives brought in to crack the case. What Dumont asks of Després should earn the actor an honorable mention as Biggest Sport of the Year. Meaner than pulling a chair out from under a fat person before they sit down and often twice as funny, this malicious evisceration of French society will probably repulse more patrons than it attracts. Strictly for those with a strong stomach and a decidedly bent outlook. With Juliette Binoche and Valeria Bruni Teldeschi. (2016) — Scott Marks
