Opposites stranded on a tropical island -- a battered and boozy pilot and a hip bag-of-bones journalist in an assortment of braless tops -- with only a boatload of pirates for company. (The hero is called Quinn or, in the regional French accent, "Queenie," in an apparent attempt to promote resemblances to The African Queen.) The two of them eventually get around to a Burt-Lancaster-Deborah-Kerr kiss in the surf, but not before getting around to a Butch-and-Sundance feet-first cliff dive. The publicity whipped up around the casting of a self-declared lesbian in a heterosexual role was nothing but stupid, but Anne Heche does seem to be pushing a bit hard, behaving rather as if she were in a TV sitcom than a jam. With Harrison Ford, David Schwimmer, Jacqueline Obradors; directed by Ivan Reitman. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
