A little bit of a Rules of the Game -- a very little bit of it -- but centered on the British rather than French aristocracy, and set on the eve of the earlier World War (and mowing down pheasants, in the hunting sequences, instead of rabbits). Brief dim vignettes, tromping over ground already spongy from past traffic, add up to a drably monochromatic mosaic: "Ruskin! I love Ruskin! Even when he's talking nonsense I love the sound of it!" and "I believe an age, perhaps even a civilization, may be coming to an end" and "What a boring conversation!" and so on and so on. The final scene, significantly longer than any other, makes significantly more impact -- at any rate on anyone still awake. With James Mason, Edward Fox, Judi Bowker, Cheryl Campbell, Gordon Jackson, and John Gielgud; directed by Alan Bridges. (1985) — Duncan Shepherd
