Melanie Griffith reprises (more or less) her Working Girl role in a different setting: the breathy-voiced secretary who shows she's ready for bigger things, in this case spying on the Nazis in wartime Berlin. The "office" romance and espionage action are just so much women's-fiction air freshener. (Besides a secretary, the heroine's a movie fan who gets to live out her fantasy life with no adjustment for the real thing.) Big hoot for music lovers: "Von Karajan is playing Wagner" -- and sure enough, there he is, in front of the Berlin Staatsoper, as snowy-haired as the day he died, almost half a century later. From the Susan Isaacs novel; with Michael Douglas, Liam Neeson, Joely Richardson, and John Gielgud; written and directed by David Seltzer. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
