Part of John Ford's post-war cavalry trilogy, and probably the most magisterial of them in its command of the landscape, the historical perspective, the manly sentiments. Disguised in premature white hair and handlebar mustache, John Wayne fills his final days in the military with a worthwhile sortie into Indian territory, as well as with some pastimes around the fort which provide an outlet for Ford's abundant bathos (and which can be endured if you bite down on a bullet) -- horseplay with Victor McLaglen, one-way conversations with his late wife at her gravesite, and so forth. (1949) — Duncan Shepherd
