Advertised, not very instructively, as Shag: The Movie, when what we needed to know was Shag: The Dance, in case we thought it might have been Shag: The Carpet or Shag: The Haircut. It concerns four girlfriends on a bachelorette fling in Myrtle Beach, 1963, on the last weekend before one of them is due to be married. Very much in the same class as Where the Boys Are, albeit a little quieter and better behaved, possibly even a bit of an underachiever. And Annabeth Gish, as the newly slimmed-down "Pudge," destined for a few minutes of glory on the dance floor, ought to be permitted to skip the next couple of grades. With Scott Coffey, Phoebe Cates, and Bridget Fonda; directed by Zelda Barron. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
