Semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film by the French-Canadian Léa Pool. In the first minute of action, the pubescent heroine dribbles a few drops of blood on the seashore rocks -- her first period, and a clarion warning of the perils and pitfalls of the coming-of-age film. But the girl, Karine Vanasse, proves to be a delight -- in her infatuation with, and emulation of, Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie; in her transferential infatuation with a Karina look-alike teacher; in her lesbian flirtation with a pixie-haired classmate; in her solo rendition of the Brigitte Bardot oldie, "Sidonie," self-accompanied on guitar during the closing credits; and in her every dazzling smile.
