Don Bluth, disgruntled secessionist from the Disney animation division, attempts to uphold the old traditions. That's not always possible or always good. The principal characters, ranging from drably drawn rats and mice to an unrecognizable owl, are the principal problems, and some of the more easily identifiable voices (Dom DeLuise's, John Carradine's) distract badly from the artwork. The backgrounds are painstakingly done, however, and the action scenes unfailingly sweep you up. And if the murky storytelling and the extraneous supernaturalism sometimes leave you in the dark, the inspiriting music of Jerry Goldsmith helps pull you through. (1982) — Duncan Shepherd
