A Spike Lee comedy (or "a Spike Lee joint," as he would have it) about life at a black Southern college: fraternities, football, student protests, everything. Certainly a step in some direction from She's Gotta Have It, with a bigger budget, full color, and a "major Hollywood studio" behind it. Hardly in the commercial mainstream, for all that, although broad enough in manner to span across it, and actually at its best when it stretches into full song and dance (in order, for example, to debate the merits of natural hair versus straightened and dyed). With Spike Lee, Larry Fishburne, Joe Seneca, Ossie Davis. (1988) — Duncan Shepherd
