David-and-Goliath court-martial: David a divorced, drinking, limping, emotionally fragile ex-Marine, ranked sixty-seventh in his law class at Georgetown, now called upon to defend his old Vietnam buddy for opening fire on a crowd of protesters outside the American embassy in Yemen; and Goliath a State Department bad guy who, by the very nature of his office, moves to cover up the truth even before he knows what it is. Caught in the middle is an honorable, reasonable, fair-minded prosecutor (well played, with New York accent, by Guy Pearce) who occupies the only strip of gray in this otherwise black-and-white potboiler. Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Greenwood, Ben Kingsley, Anne Archer; directed by William Friedkin. (2000) — Duncan Shepherd
