A choking dose of Sixties nostalgia. Two Vietnam-era draft evaders, incommunicado for twenty years in Central America, return home as modern-day Rip van Winkles, carrying Top Secret info about CIA intervention in the south, and catching up on things like acid rain, pollution, the hole in the ozone layer, AIDS, colorization, tanning salons. Faith in hippies as saviors of the American Way is a little too sincere for the general comic good -- and the comic good is generally pretty bad anyway. Eric Roberts, who has no comic qualities and no hippie qualities (including, in the Central American interlude, the world's worst false beard), is a big liability. Whoever hired him is a bigger one. Cheech Marin, Julie Hagerty, Robert Carradine; directed by Aaron Russo and David Greenwalt. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
