The rematch between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed may have been demanded by the unwritten laws of boxing, but not by those of fiction. Many's the movie that ends with the hero and heroine saying "I love you'" and "I love you too," but few are the sequels that feel it necessary to fill in the exact details of the marriage proposal, the church ceremony, the wedding night, the new home, the economic pinch, the pregnancy, and the traumatic birth. This family-scrapbook sort of storytelling appeals not to the viewer's critical judgment, but rather to his feelings of friendship for the characters. The very impatiently awaited championship fight has a good first round and a grotesque fifteenth. With Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Carl Weathers, Burt Young, and Burgess Meredith; written and directed by Stallone. (1979) — Duncan Shepherd
