Traitor or patriot? By now, audiences have made up their minds about Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, and no movie — particularly a made-for-TV documentary erroneously released into theaters — is going to change them. Director Laura Poitras tries for an occasional jab between the love taps: a pair of rape accusations are brought to light, while Assange’s reputation for anti-Semitism are completely ignored, such that there is an overall air of perfumed puffery through which the aroma of an extended Entertainment Tonight profile prevails. This is particularly true when Lady Gaga assumes the guest-interviewer seat and, with all the delicacy of a human tennis cannon, lobs such thought-provokers as “Do you ever feel like f#$@ing crying?” I did, especially when I glanced down at my watch to find that there were still 30 minutes left in this shoot-now-and-figure-it-out-later jumble. Wait for it to play on Showtime, then cancel your subscription and go out and see a real movie. (2017) — Scott Marks
