A prideful hitman cannot forget or forgive the honey-tongued policeman, now Assistant D.A., who put him in prison. (He's a real bad one, all right: "The parole board's ready, Blake. I hope you remembered to floss." "I did!" he replies. "With your wife's pubic hair!") He doesn't just want to get even; he wants the man to suffer. The man, and the entire audience. The action is simply ridiculous when it isn't also revolting (electric drill to the temple, power saw to the chest). One little maneuver requires the hero, with split-second timing, to jump through a skylight and into a two-foot-wide chute a floor below, in order to escape an explosion that takes off the top of a building. Oh, wow! With Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Lindsay Wagner, Ice T; directed by Russell Mulcahy. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
