Brand-new brainstorm from the maker of Mortal Kombat, Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused with the maker of Boogie Nights, Paul Thomas Anderson): back to the video-game shelf for an ugly, ultra-violent, live-action dramatization, set somewhere called the Hive, underground headquarters of something called the Umbrella Corporation, sometime in the far future. It keeps you in an extended state of not knowing what the hell is going on -- extended, to be more exact, well past the point of caring. Befuddlement tends to nullify suspense, no matter how many lethal laser beams and flesh-eating zombies are coming at you. Michelle Rodriguez, as a second-banana commando, again demonstrates her rightness and readiness for a tough-chick role ("Blow me"), if ever one should come along in a decent movie. Milla Jovovich, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy. (2002) — Duncan Shepherd
