Comedian Bill Maher, the smirking skeptic, travels the globe to goad and taunt, and talk behind the backs of, believers of many stripes (not Far Eastern), all in an effort to galvanize the silent minority of Americans — 16% by latest count — who profess to be atheists and agnostics. He is content to keep it light and superficial and once in a while funny, though at the end he climbs into his own figurative pulpit, in a moralizing manner not dissimilar to the wrap-ups of Jerry Springer. Directed by Larry Charles. (2008) — Duncan Shepherd
