Richard Gere puts his paycheck where his mouth is, and takes part in a huffy, sniffy reproof of Communist China on its human-rights record, although the whipped-up case of an American entrepreneur framed for murder while in the middle of negotiations to lift the Bamboo Curtain to the glories of Western television cannot be said to be typical. It might almost suggest that those Yellow Devils have only gone too far when they monkey with a Yank. In his commitment to the cause, outwardly little different from his commitment to Final Analysis or First Knight, Gere runs through his normal portfolio of faces. He blinks, he crinkles his forehead, he knits his brows, he narrows one eye, he puckers his lips, he sticks out his lower teeth, he smiles that lopsided half-smile, he laughs through his nose. No new gear. With Bai Ling, Tsai Chin, Bradley Whitford; directed by Jon Avnet. (1997) — Duncan Shepherd
