Medieval detective yarn about an innovative troupe of travelling players, including an incognito fallen priest, who deviate from Bible stories and (pioneers of the modern docudrama) tackle a local serial-murder case: "We'll perform this afternoon, and use the morning to find out more of what happened." Excitable, not to say exciting, visual style: wide-angle lenses, overhead shots, rack focus, slow-motion, shakily hand-held camerawork, flashy flashbacks, shock cross-cuts. It's much more exciting just to see Willem Dafoe's contortionist limbering-up exercises. With Paul Bettany, Gina McKee, Brian Cox, Vincent Cassel; directed by Paul McGuigan. (2004) — Duncan Shepherd
