Interesting idea: to re-enact the drug addiction, mental breakdown, and recovery of actor Jia Hongsheng with the actor himself playing the role. (Together with his real father, mother, others.) The shopping excursion of the peasant father to purchase a Beatles tape is amusing (the old man has never heard of them and is unclear on their name), as is the recitation from the album's lyric sheet, with the original English translated into Chinese and then back into English subtitles ("Let It Be" comes through as "Take It Naturally"). But the story on the whole, though tastefully done, is as tiresome as most drug stories. Directed by Zhang Yang, who was directing the actor in a stage production of Kiss of the Spider Woman when his drug troubles began. (2001) — Duncan Shepherd
